Chapter 1574:

? ? ? ? ?

Nicole's urgency to confront Brett in person stemmed from the fact that he was the last person to see her father alive. What had happened between them?

Why had he committed such a betrayal? Why had he turned against his father, who had always treated him so kindly, especially in light of his father's generosity toward Brett's sick daughter?

Additionally, Nicole's mother had shown Brett great compassion, even renting out an amusement park to make her daughter's birthday special.

At the time, Brett's gratitude seemed sincere because genuine emotions cannot be manufactured. So why had he inflicted harm on his father?

Nicole was baffled and felt compelled to confront Brett directly.

However, Ethel lacked the information Nicole was looking for. “We haven't located Brett yet. We’ve checked immigration records and there’s no indication he’s left the country, but his family maintains he’s gone overseas,” Ethel replied.

“That's impossible,” Nicole immediately said. “Brett cares deeply for his daughter. She means everything to him. “He would never abandon her.”

“I agree,” Ethel agreed. “From the beginning, his family has been extraordinarily secretive. Brett's mother pretended to be deaf and mute during our visit, implying that they possess some knowledge. It’s possible that Brett was forewarned and escaped elsewhere.”

Nicole felt a surge of frustration, but she became even more determined in her pursuit of Brett. He must know something crucial.

Sensing Nicole's distress, Ethel reassured her. "Don't worry, Kiki. I've requested to reopen your father's case as a criminal investigation. Once authorized, we'll be able to issue a warrant for Brett's arrest, which will make it harder for him to hide and easier for us to locate him."

Ethel tried to project confidence, but she had her doubts. If Brett was on the run, it could take years to find him. Some fugitives managed to elude capture for years. Because of the outdated classification of Nicole's father's death as self-inflicted, crucial evidence might no longer be available. If Brett made up his story, uncovering the facts would be arduous.

Nicole came up with a different approach. “I know how to track Brett down.”

Ethel's eyes lit up. “What's your strategy?”

"Brett is very fond of his daughter. By keeping an eye on her, we will find him. He will not remain distant from her," Nicole said.

Ethel, hesitant, replied, “I cannot legally pursue Brett’s daughter at this time. “My current caseload and unprocessed paperwork require review and approval first.”

Nicole volunteered and said, “It's okay. “I’ll take care of it.”

Ethel felt uneasy. “That's risky, Kiki. If Brett, the murder suspect, discovers your plan, you could be in danger. It’s too dangerous.”

"Don't worry, Ethel, I'll take extra precautions," Nicole assured her.

Nicole's rush to locate Brett was based on fear that he might run away with her daughter. Getting out of the country didn't depend solely on flights. Escaping unnoticed was an option.

As long as Brett's daughter remained within national borders, Brett was probably there too. Keeping an eye on his daughter would eventually lead to him.

Seeing Nicole's determination, Ethel hesitantly agreed, but stressed the warning: "You must carry self-defense tools, such as pepper spray, and take extreme precautions. Inform me immediately if anything comes up. If I can't go, I'll send someone."
