Chapter 1544:

? ? ? ? ?

Jarrod paused, a hint of reluctance in his voice. “Take him?” He thought he'd done his part by not leaving Roscoe behind.

Nicole, noticing Jarrod's hesitation, urged, "We have to move quickly. He's been drugged and can't walk." She knew the effects of the drug well, having experienced its powerful but paralyzing impact before.

It left the user incapacitated for a couple of hours while it took effect. Roscoe's recovery could take even longer, given the dosage he had been given.

Jarrod looked at Roscoe, who showed no desire to be carried, and seemed conflicted.

Roscoe, not wanting to leave Nicole in a difficult position, insisted, “No need. Get Nicole to safety and leave me alone.”

Nicole quickly replied, “This is no time for courage. “We cannot waste time.” The parasites were relentless, hunger driving them to attack. Any moment of hesitation would make them prey.

While Roscoe remained silent, Nicole's gaze at Jarrod was pleading.

Jarrod raised an eyebrow and commented, “Didn't you hear? He doesn’t want any help.” Nicole, increasingly frustrated by the delay, couldn't hide her irritation.

Nicole was incredulous at their interaction, which seemed childish given the dire circumstances. “If you're not going to carry him, then I will.”

Nicole, declared beginning to crouch down despite her injuries. However, she doubted she had the strength to even lift Austin, let alone Roscoe.

Jarrod, with a cold look, crouched down reluctantly. “Fine, I’ll do it.”

Roscoe, however, remained sulking and uncooperative. Nicole had no choice but to manually place Roscoe's arm around Jarrod's shoulders to ensure his compliance. Reluctantly, Roscoe put his arm around Jarrod's neck.

Seeing Roscoe's reluctance, Nicole reprimanded him: "Stop acting like a child."

Roscoe replied quietly, “I’m not.” His resistance wasn't a matter of uncooperation; he simply didn't want to remain in Jarrod's debt, which, in his opinion, undermined his standing with Nicole.

Hearing Nicole's reprimand, Jarrod felt his anger subside and agreed. "You're being difficult."

Exasperated, Roscoe's face darkened even further. Nicole said quickly, "Can we get going, please?"

Finally, Jarrod stopped picking and signaled to Alec and his team. “Let's go.”

Just then, Nicole realized that the old man's body was overrun by parasites, a gross and pitiful sight. It was clear that there was no way to save him.

Nicole realized that refusing to stay in the tree any longer was the older man's choice, a choice made after satisfying his need for revenge, leaving him with no desire to continue living.

At dawn, Alec and the others approach Jarrod. The older man suddenly stood up, held a fuse and shouted defiantly: “These damned insects will die with me!”

The veteran quickly pulled the fuse, igniting the oil he had spread earlier and the flames spread through the previously dug trenches, quickly surrounding them with fire.

The old man planned to trap the parasites with fire to prevent them from harming others.

Nicole finally understood the reason why the old man insisted that she leave before dawn. He had orchestrated the moment to eradicate the parasites along with him.

“Run!” Nicole shouted.
