Chapter 1532:
? ? ? ? ?
Determined to unravel the mysteries behind the ritual, Nicole resolved to find a way to get closer, navigating the shadows with quiet determination.
Hearing Emerie's unmistakable voice, signaling her proximity to the front row, a surge of determination coursed through Nicole's veins. If Emerie was present, Roscoe couldn't be far away.
Watching the witches rise and approaching the fire to prepare for the impending ritual, Nicole quickly formulated a plan of action.
With unwavering determination, Nicole unsheathed her knife and pressed it to the throat of the last witch in line. “Not a sound, or you will lose your life.”
The attacked witch, clearly a subordinate member, froze in terror at the sudden threat, recognizing the grave danger she faced. It was evident that this witch lacked Emerie's authority.
Nicole wasted no time and landed a swift blow to the witch's neck, knocking her out. Taking advantage of the distraction, she dragged the unconscious witch into a secluded alcove, taking the witch's cloak to conceal her identity.
Fortunately, the darkness and the wide cloak made Nicole almost invisible as she blended into the group of witches.
Soon it was her turn to advance. Keeping her head down, Nicole walked with the other witches toward the bonfire, where many had gathered to form a large circle. The chief chanted a phrase, which the witches echoed.
Nicole synthesized the words with her lips, while her eyes moved cautiously around her. Taking advantage of a moment of distraction, she glanced at the stage.
The chief spoke with fervor, and beside him, on a crescent-shaped altar, there was a figure tied in the shape of a cross, with its head drooping, apparently lifeless.
Nicole's heart stopped. She stared, mouth agape, at the figure on the stage. It was Roscoe, the man who had helped her escape.
How had he ended up as the ritual sacrifice? Emerie had claimed that not everyone was fit to be sacrificed. And Roscoe was a man! How could he possibly qualify?
Confused and stunned, Nicole stood still, her eyes fixed on Roscoe. As if sensing her gaze, Roscoe looked up at her.
Among the sea of red-clad witches, Nicole's stillness caught everyone's attention.
Roscoe spotted Nicole right away. Then, a witch standing behind Nicole bumped into her and he looked up, noticing that Nicole's face was unfamiliar.
The witch was about to open her mouth to speak, but a loud crash from the altar interrupted her. Roscoe shook himself and knocked over the cross to which he was tied.
The assembly came to a standstill and their attention focused on the stage.
