Love Unbreakable by Bank Brook -
Chapter 122
? ? ? ? ?
Three burly figures appeared on the video call, their faces covered by hoods.
Lauren was kneeling on the floor, and one of the men pushed her face into the phone. His face, neck and body were covered in blood. In addition, his lips were chapped and his eyes were so swollen he could barely keep them open. She looked totally defeated.
Her voice hoarse and weak, Lauren sobbed.
«Mitchel… Help me…
Please... Do you remember that time I saved you? Help me now..."
Bringing up old accounts was the most effective way to change minds. Sure enough, Mitchel's expression changed in an instant.
A slap! One of the hooded men slapped Lauren across the face and growled, “Enough of this nonsense.”
It was clear that Lauren had been suffering for a while. The slap drew a mouthful of blood from her, making her look even more miserable.
Mitchel's expression changed like a switch. With eyes turned as cold as a glacier, he bellowed, "How dare you!"
The hooded man giggled as if he had heard a joke. His laugh was distorted by a voice changer, making it sound even more disturbing.
«This woman says that you are her husband and that you are rich. It's true?"
An eerie silence fell over both parties.
Raegan impulsively grabbed Mitchel's arm. She wasn't really sure what she thought, but something deep down told her that she shouldn't admit it.
Mitchel's face turned grim and he focused on the screen. Seeing her hesitation, the hooded leader unleashed a brutal kick on Lauren's stomach.
Blood splattered into Lauren's mouth, and her face turned a ghostly white.
«Bitch, how dare you lie to me! "You're dead."
The hooded man raised his foot, ready to hit Lauren again. But at that critical moment, Mitchel finally spoke.
"He's telling the truth."
Raegan felt like she'd been slapped. She silently loosened her grip on Mitchel's arm, but he didn't seem to notice. His attention was completely on the phone.
Upon hearing Mitchel's confession, the hooded man stopped what he was doing and smiled.
“In that case, prepare ten million dollars in cash and bring it to the ferry bridge. Or else..."
She grabbed a dagger and carefully nicked Lauren's wrist, just enough for blood to start dripping.
He wouldn't die instantly, but time was running out.
"Now it's a race against time," the hooded man mocked and, without waiting for Mitchel's response, he ended the video call.
Silence enveloped the car.
Mitchel turned to Raegan with a serious expression.
“Raegan, I need…”
Maybe it was because Mitchel had been so nice to Raegan lately that he thought she might understand him if he left now. However, Raegan cut him short.
"Don't go."
It's not that Raegan didn't have a heart. It was that I thought it would be better to send a professional to take care of this serious situation.
Furthermore, his intuition told him that there was more than what seemed.
"We can call the police and have them take care of this," Raegan reasoned.
Mitchel frowned and rejected the idea immediately.
«We cannot involve the police. "Lauren's safety is at stake."
Those outlaws had no conscience. Mitchel figured he couldn't play with Lauren's life. Furthermore, he would pay his debt, as long as Lauren arrived safely in Swynborough.
Seeing that Mitchel continued to side with Lauren, a bitter taste filled Raegan's mouth.
"Mitchel, have you considered that this could all be a setup?"
Raegan expressed her suspicions.
Mitchel's expression became even more somber and he asked, "Where are you going?"
Raegan presented his observations.
«In the video, Lauren's shoes were immaculate. If they beat her and kept her in a run-down warehouse, how could her shoes be so clean?
Unlike Mitchel, she had paid close attention to details and had realized that something was wrong.
The amount of blood Lauren was spitting up seemed out of character.
"And why would a kidnapper care if the person paying the ransom was her husband or not?"
There could only be one answer to these questions. Lauren was orchestrating the whole thing.
Lauren was aware that she was listening, and that's why he used those words to provoke her.
The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place. For some reason, Raegan couldn't shake the feeling that the kidnapping was Lauren's ploy.
The more I thought about it, the more I felt like something was wrong.
As his concern for Mitchel grew, he insisted: "The timing is strange, don't you think? You finally decide to have Lauren leave the country today, and then she gets kidnapped? It seems like a ploy to change your mind.
“Stop it, Raegan!” Mitchel cut her off, apparently exasperated.
Are you suggesting that Lauren would risk her own life just to convince me to let her stay?
Mitchel's defense left Raegan momentarily speechless.
But he wasn't done yet, and he continued, "Of course, Lauren has made mistakes. But risking his life in a plan disguised as a kidnapping is crazy.
Raegan tried to reason with him again.
«Mitchel, your judgment is clouded right now. "Think about what I have told you."
"I said enough!" Mitchel raised his voice and emphasized each word. “Raegan, stop being so cynical. "It's bad for the baby."
Mitchel's accusation hurt Raegan deeply. So, in his eyes, she was some kind of villain eager to get rid of Lauren.
Well, if he already thought she was evil, maybe it was time he learned from Lauren and played the villain for real.
“Listen, Mitchel, I'm telling you, you're not going to save Lauren on your own,” Raegan said firmly, leaving no room for argument.
But his plea fell on Mitchel's deaf ears, who coldly responded: “Get out of the car. “I’ll have Matteo come pick you up.”
Mitchel's contemptuous tone was like a punch to the gut and a sharp pain radiated from his abdomen.
Raegan clutched her abdomen and screamed, "Mitchel, my stomach..."
Before she could finish the sentence, Mitchel had already lifted her from the seat, leaving her suspended in the air for a moment.
Feeling him hug her eased the pain a little, but her heart was still tight.
"My stomach hurts," he said with a trembling voice.
And then, as if dropping a shopping bag, he set it down on the cold, unforgiving asphalt.
«Raegan, stop playing childish games. I have to go".
He got back into the car and sped away.
Raegan crouched on the road and watched in disbelief as the car disappeared into the distance.
So he thought she was just acting like a child?
In that instant, she felt as if her heart had turned to stone and she had become numb to the world around her.
He deserved it, didn't he? How could she be so naive?
How could he fall into the trap again after a sweet talk?
The pain in his abdomen intensified until it was unbearable, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
With one hand for support, Raegan struggled to her feet and began to stagger toward the hospital.
Out of nowhere, a silver-gray minivan roared up. And before she knew it, two hooded men had put her in the vehicle.
