Maya

I spent The weekend in complete tranquility. After Friday night I didn’t go out anymore, I preferred to dedicate myself to my child, who lately, I was neglecting too much, and Axel had enjoyed it up to the last drop of attention demanding more and more and laughing cheerfully.

All my mind did was take me back to Nate, and every time my phone vibrated, I hoped it was him showing up or even asking me to see me for a quickie. I didn’t care, I just wanted to see him and I knew it was bad, a horrible sign that I had to distance myself from him otherwise I would be over again with a broken heart.

Monday arrived in all its tranquility and I went to the hospital in the afternoon, performing my shift without problems and without interruptions.

When I was returning to the locker room, I heard me calling, and when I saw who he was, I was surprised.

“Maya!” Jeremy shouted as he met me in the hallway.

“Hey,” I said as soon as she was near me.

“Have you finished your shift?” I nodded, not understanding.

“Do you want to go out to dinner?” he asked me hopefully.

“Sorry, Jeremy, but I have to go home, my mom can’t stay and take care of Axel, not tonight,” I said, scratching my head awkwardly.

Jeremy was disappointed for a moment, then he looked up at the sky and thought for a moment, “Tomorrow? Chinese dinner? I promise not to kidnap you for too long!” he said hopefully.

“I think we can do it tomorrow night,” I said.

I was not uncomfortable with Jeremy, I was comfortable with him, it was easy to talk to him and time passed in a second. He was an interesting person and a charming man. I liked spending time with him.

In that last week, we had often met in the corridors and very often we had stopped in the cafeteria to have a coffee together and talk. It was easy to be with him, it gave me a sense of tranquility and serenity that not everyone was able to give me. So far only one, but i didn’t want to think about him.

“Perfect! Then see you tomorrow!” he said cheerfully, and returning from whence he had come.

I laughed before heading for the locker room with a smile on my face.

The next day, I was on my way to the locker room, I’d just been off work when I got a text, for a moment I thought it was my mom telling me that Axel was having some trouble, but when I saw the name on the screen, I squinted my eyes and I froze.

Pizza at your place tonight?

He asked me. He asked. After four days of silence, now he was looking for me again. I was hoping for a message this weekend, a call, something, and instead he was too busy doing who knows what, and now that his schedule was clear, he wanted to do me. A*****e.

He asked me. He asked. After four days of silence, now he was looking for me again. I was hoping for a message this weekend, a call, something, and instead he was too busy doing who knows what, and now that his schedule was clear, he wanted to do me. A*****e.

I blinked several times. But what was I thinking? I was really hoping for something from him? What the hell was he taking me?

It had to be the hormones again, surely my period was being felt after months of absence first for pregnancy then who knows why.

I shook my head and hurried to type.

Maya: Busy tonight. Maybe next time.

I put my phone in my pocket and went into the locker room without looking at my phone.

Nate

Maya: Busy tonight. Maybe next time.

I stared at the frowning screen. I was parked in front of the pizzeria, ready to take my order, I did not expect to receive a refusal.

A commitment? What kind of commitment?

I couldn’t help but think and think about it.

I had spent the whole weekend and the last two days working on a complicated case, that was the only day I had gotten rid of it before and the only thing I needed was to spend a quiet evening with someone I could talk to. I wasn’t sure if Maya was that someone, but when I had my phone in my hand to call someone, I automatically ended up on her number.

My coworkers were assholes I didn’t even consider friends, my only friends had moved out of college and I certainly wouldn’t have gone to my harpy sister’s and really wanted to spend an evening with Maya.

No s*x, just a relaxing evening after the last few stressful days.

Who did she have a commitment with? A man?

I shook my head. I’m sure she was at home looking after her son, and yet, if she was at home, she wouldn’t mind a little company. But maybe she was at work. I had heard from Jess that many times she had to extend her shifts if there were emergencies.

Yeah, maybe it was, she didn’t have to get any ideas, it wasn’t like her.

I got out of the car and locked it before entering the pizzeria and getting a pizza to take home. It looked like I was gonna be alone that night.

Maya.

Jeremy and I went to eat in a very intimate Italian restaurant. We talked a lot and we laughed. Jeremy can make me feel comfortable, like I rarely do. The time seemed to fly and soon were already eleven in the evening and now it was time to go home.

“God is really late!” I said looking at the display on my phone to check if there were any messages from my mother.

“Duty calls,” Jeremy laughed.

I got up and put my jacket on while Jeremy left some bills on the table and we headed out. The icy air hit me hard, bringing a gentle blush to my cheeks as the frost penetrated my bones. I didn’t mind the cold, I liked to feel the soft caress on the cheeks.

Jeremy accompanied me to my car, and before I could get inside, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards him.

His dark eyes were fixed on mine, while our faces were so close that I could feel his breath caressing my cold lips. Jeremy put a hand on my cheek, gently stroking it. His touch gave me chills all over my body, but it wasn’t the same. It wasn’t like Nate’s touch, he was giving me sparks that I couldn’t control and that completely wrapped me up, flipping my brain and making me lose all sense of time and space, as if every time he touched me the world disappeared and there were only me and him.

Despite this thought of mine, I gave in to Jeremy’s gentle caress, going against his hand as he bent over and brought his face closer to mine, until our lips touched each other. I closed my eyes and let he rest his mouth on mine, gently and slowly.

When our lips touched I expected fireworks, an explosion that would make my legs tremble, but nothing happened, my body remained impassive. I opened my lips slightly and Jeremy took the opportunity to invade my mouth with his tongue that immediately began a sinuous dance with mine.

He left one hand on the cheek while the other laid it on my side, pushing my body against his while I wrapped his neck with my arms and answered the k**s looking for something that even I didn’t know what it was. I let myself be carried away but I didn’t feel anything, it wasn’t like with Him.

I slowly pulled away from Jeremy and he put his forehead against mine.

“Well, I’d say good night,” he said cheerfully and smiling.

I smiled back as a sense of unease pervaded me.

“See you at work tomorrow,” he said.

“Yes tomorrow,” I answered, detaching myself from him and opening the door of my car.

“Drive carefully,” he said as I entered the car.

I nodded and closed the door, before turning on the car and leaving for home. With a weight on my heart, like I just betrayed someone, but there was no one for me to betray.
