Heartstrings on Fire (Agnes and Jared) -
Chapter 899
Agnes suddenly had an idea and pulled a chocolate bar out of her pocket.
She stretched out her hand and offered it, "You're Esther, right? Want some candy?"
Esther's eyes instantly locked onto the treat in Agnes' hand.
She looked curious, "Is candy sweet?"
Agnes chuckled, "Of course candy is sweet, here you go."
But Esther seemed hesitant, "They tell me candy is sweet, but I've never had any."
Agnes found it odd, kids her age usually love sweets.
Sure, candy can cause cavities, and kids shouldn't eat too much. A little moderation is all it takes, though. If a child doesn't even know the taste of candy, isn't that a shame? Esther approached Agnes.
Agnes unwrapped the chocolate and handed it to her, "Try this, it's chocolate."
Esther gazed at the dark chocolate, her eyes sparkling like stars, seemingly able to shine on their own. She carefully took the chocolate and placed it in her mouth. The chocolate melted on Esther's tongue.
She exclaimed, amazed, "So this is what sweet tastes like, this is the best thing I've ever eaten."
Agnes watched Esther dancing around with joy.
It was a pity that this child had never tasted chocolate before. Perhaps her parents had sent her here from a young age for a reason.
Agnes felt a sudden pang of sympathy for the little girl. She wondered if it was enlightened parenting or necessity.
She was so young, and not living with her own parents, subjected to strict training and learning.
Life's choices have pros and cons.
All parents must weigh these before deciding, surely.
Agnes still had a few chocolate bars in her pocket.
She gave them all to Esther, "Chocolate is a treat, but you should only have one a day, okay? Save the rest for tomorrow."
Having never tasted chocolate before, Esther had discovered the flavor of sweetness.
She felt a special kind of affection for Agnes, who had introduced her to this taste.
Esther squinted and said, "Thank you, pretty lady." Her gaze then fell on Nocturne, cradled in Agnes' arms, "Who's him? Is he taking a nap?"
Agnes glanced at her son and explained, "This is my son, Nocturne. He's sick, so he sleeps a lot. I'm here so your grandpa can treat him. Nocturne will be living here, can you help me take good care of him?"
Esther nodded vigorously, "Don't worry, I'm good at taking care of people. Grandpa's a great healer, he'll surely cure your son."
Agnes pinched Esther's chubby cheek. This little girl is so lovable.
Soon after, Mr. Hanson came out. Agnes quickly stood up, "Sir, this is my son."
Mr. Hanson said, "Come in, let me have a look."
He checked Nocturne's pulse while Esther watched curiously, "Grandpa, what's wrong with him?"
