It was only at the traffic light that Tobias took out his phone to find out that Skylar was getting impatient.

When the light turned green, he placed the phone in a slot between the seats. Idania's gaze fell on the three missed calls by Skylar.

"Aren't you going to pick up your girlfriend's call?" Idania flicked a carefully measured gaze at Tobias.

"Not yet. I'll head home after dropping you off."

Idania was delighted that Tobias was ignoring Skylar's calls and messages for her.

What a stubborn woman. It's obvious that she keeps a close leash on Tobias. Her insecurity about him doing something behind her back is obvious from her many calls. Is three phone calls in a row really necessary?

Skylar called again. This time, Tobias decided to pick up her call after a moment of hesitance as the car soared through the flyover.

Idania passed the phone to Tobias but accidentally turned on speaker mode.

As Skylar's voice filled the car, Idania thought it sounded very soft and alluring.

She's being coquettish in the way that men like!

"Where are you? You've been gone for a while. I need you to help me look for a pharmacy that's still open right now. I'm a little swollen downstairs because you always ask for that position..."

The atmosphere within the car suddenly became awkward. Even the usually imperturbable Tobias blushed.

"Something came up," he cut across Skylar before she could finish. "I'll be back after dropping a friend home."

Tobias hung up before she could respond.

Idania was amused at the irony of her fate as she finally understood the futility of her wandering around his place of residence in the hopes of running into him.

When I was looking for miracles out in the bitter cold, he has been shacking up with another woman.

"You can drop me by the side of the road if you're in a hurry. It's not far to walk from here." Though reluctant, she forced a begrudging smile.

Tobias had already recovered from his embarrassment. The tinge of pink was gone from his cheeks as he turned his attention back to the road.

"It's fine, we're here anyway. It's just a couple of minutes to go."

Idania nodded meekly as she stifled a cough with her hand over her mouth.

The sound of that seemed to remind Tobias of something. "I'd heard you did not consult the specialist I put you in touch with."

We once shared a relationship, after all. It's only right for me to ensure that she's cared for.

Idania smiled sadly. "Thank you for your concern. But I've found another hospital and am undergoing the necessary treatment. The doctor said that my day-to-day mood is a big determinant of my recovery. It's quite depressing for me to be living alone with no one to talk to."

Tobias did not respond, though he understood how she must feel.

As much as I feel sorry for her, there's nothing I can do for her. We're just friends now.

As the car rolled to a halt outside her lobby, Idania gazed longingly at him. She looked as if she was about to say something.

Tobias lit a cigarette and took a long draw before saying, "You should go home. Get some rest.”

Idania's hand was on the handle. She did not invite Tobias up as she already knew the answer he was going to give.

"Could you come to visit me often?" she pleaded, turning back once more after she had alighted the vehicle. "You are the only person I know around here."

"You should get some rest. It's late."

Idania nodded, crestfallen at his cold response. She was once again unpleasantly reminded of his complete lack of sentiment.

I wonder if the first few years of our relationship even meant something to him.
