Levi finally gets it

He didn't question me further, just got up and managed to wake up Quincy. Right now, he's struggling with a still-unconscious Asher.

And I'm losing my mind.

I need to get them out of here before anyone comes in, and time is of the essence. I have no idea how many men are outside that door, and they could get in at any moment.

Levi, frustrated, backhands Asher across the face. He jerks up into an immediate sitting position, "What the f**k," he growls, "Was that for?"

"Get your ass up," Levi says, "We're out of here."

Asher rubs at his cheek, a vexed expression on his tired face, but it fades away the second his eyes land on me.

"Amery?" his voice is soft, concerned, "What's wrong."

A loud thud at the door interrupts us.

"That's what's wrong," Quincy states, already caught up.

"There's a door out back, let's use it." Levi's already moving towards the direction of the kitchen.

"Wait," I say, "We don't know if they've surrounded us already. Going out back could be risky."

"It can't be riskier than waiting here like sitting ducks not knowing what's about to come through that door." His face is pulled taut, almost angry

He's always been the worst at keeping his negative emotions under his sleeve. It's like he's lived to express them. But right now, I don't have the time or the energy to deal with this side of him. "Let's go," I say.

"Where's Emelda?" Asher asks me.

"Not important," comes my reply, just as Levi pulls open the back door. And just like I'd expected, it's littered with men and turned wolves alike.

I take a step back, already retreating into the house when I hear the front door cave in.

"Search the entire property!" A voice booms, "They're here somewhere."

Were trapped.

That helplessness bubbles up inside me again. I made it this far, and yet, there was still nothing I could do.

There was nothing I could do to save them.

There was nothing I could do to save myself.

Three of the large men outside the back entrance charge toward us, the same number of shifted wolves trailing behind them

I shake my head, squeezing my eyes shut as I scream, "No!

A moment passes, and then nothing.

"Holy s**1!" Quincy breathes behind me. I peel my eyes open, biting back a gasp.

All the men blocking our exit are dead.

Their bodies have been mangled.

Like they've been passed through a person-sized shredder.

I shake my head slightly, "How-"

"No time, Princess," Asher whispers into my ear, pushing on my lower back to get me moving, "Get a move on."

And then I'm running.

Unsure how my feet are carrying me through it all. Im unsure about a lot of things. How do I have these powers?

How do I understand them? How will I ever learn to control it?

Why the hell does this prophecy even exist? Is there even a way around it? Thought after thought assaulted me, each one plaguing my mind further. But there's no time for any answers right now, there's no time to do anything but get. away from the men hot on our heels. And so all I do is run.

I'm breathless and tired, We've been running for almost thirty minutes when the sound of flying metal cuts through the night air, mere seconds before Asher stops beside me.

"Son of a" He breaks off with a strangled growl, clutching at his shoulder. The point where a thick, silver arrow is lodged into the muscle. I choke back a cry, watching the blood pool on the short sleeve of his shirt. Weve stopped running, and I can practically feel the masses gaining on us.

"Pull it out," Quincy says.

"It's made of f*****g silver and I'm having it hard enough as it is." Asher grinds out through clenched teeth.

Levi moves up behind him, grabbing the silver arrow at the base. He barely lets out a hiss when the silver digs into his palm, yanking it out and tossing it to the ground, "You're welcome."

Asher rises to his full height, stretching his spine and folding his lips over his teeth as he rolls his shoulders, "We have to shift."

"What?" | breathe.

"They're gaining on us and we need to cover ground. We have to shift."

I shake my head frantically, "I've never shifted, I can't do it."

"You're gonna have to, Princess. It's our only option."

I take a step back, "N- no l... I can't "

"Hey," Asher's right in front of me now, that soft voice back in full swing, "I got you. I'll talk you through it, it'll be fine, okay?"

I nod my head. But my hands are still clutched to my chest, I'm still taking retreating steps. I don't want to do this. I don't want my first shift to be like this. From what I've heard, the first shift is always so excruciating. Now is not the time.

"Come on," Asher says, "Time is of the essence."

"Take off your clothes so your wolf can carry them in her mouth." Levi's standing in my vicinity now, offering his advice. I'm too scared to tell him to shove his suggestions elsewhere.

But he's right. I'd rather not be naked surrounded by three adult men when I shift back for the first time.

I'm wringing my hands in front of me, trying to stall. Asher offers a nod of encouragement. They're all standing next to one another, like a fortress of stone, waiting for my compliance.

"I have to take off my clothes," the moment I speak, it comes out meek and shallow. I hate hearing it, but I can't help the fact that I'm frightened

Our enemies are mere minutes away, and I need to break all the bones in my body in record time so we can all get out of here before were either killed or taken as prisoners. No pressure.

Theres no time to be modest

With all three of them watching me, I pull on the hem of my

1-shirt, dragging it up and over my head

I'm not wearing a bra.

I hear Quincy's hot exhale, a second later, he turns his back to me. Levi stands unmoving next to Asher, his eyes burning with a type of heat I know all too well. I pull down my shorts, taking my underwear along with it as they both stare. "I'm ready," I tell Asher.

He looks slack-jawed, having to pull himself out of a sort of trance when I speak. He covers the distance between us in three long strides. He rests both hands on my shoulders.

My eyes meet Levi's over his shoulders. Hes not looking at me, but at Asher and I together. His lips are curled downwards slightly, those snowy eyebrows of his pulling on his forehead in the type of anger only he could make so attractive. 1 look away.

"It's gonna hurt," Asher tells me, "We both know that. But - you can take it, you're strong."

"I'm strong," I repeat.

"Good." he nods once, "Now all you have to do is want it.

Imagine yourself getting down on all fours. Imagine yourself stretching into that shape and form."

I close my eyes and try. Then stop immediately.

My eyes shoot up, fear and panic mincing my actions, "It hurt." I tell him, "I barely did anything and it hurt so much."

His eyes are grim, "You're strong."

I nod. Again. And again. And again.

This time, I push through.

"Agh!" i bite down on my lower lip to keep my screams at bay. I feel my spine elongate, then just, crack. It's visceral, the heat spreading through me like white hot flames licking through my entire being.

"It hurts!" I cry out, grunting when my hips crack backwards.

"That's it," Asher coos, "You're doing perfectly. Look at you, come on,"

"Search through there! They couldn't have gotten far." A voice booms. They're closer than we thought.

“Come on, Princess. You've got this."

My elbows twist and my knees cave in. I fall to the ground with a strangled cry. Part of me wants to give up, it's just 100 much.

But Asher falls with me, "Hey, pretty girl, hey." He whispers the words, stroking my damp, matted hair. Tears spill down my cheeks. I feel my ankle pull in, my leg shrinking

A thousand needles press against my skin from the inside.

It's excruciating, blood sprouts from my torn pores as the fine hairs shoot out, white fur covering every inch of my skin.

"That's it, just a little more now. Come on,"

And then I feel my jaw snap, crack, swell. Im in so much pain, I can't even bring myself to cry anymore. It reshapes into a cone-like structure, a black snout forming the tip. With one last pull of my body inward, I curl into myself, and when I let go, my feet hit the ground.

I want to ask, is it over? But all I hear is a hot huff of breath.

"Beautiful," Asher says, looming above me.

I look down, staring at the two large, white paws digging into the soft soil.
