Chapter 309 Two Awful Rich Men
Katherine got out of the swing, stared at Marshall and asked, "Where is Kyle? He has just been here."
Plainly, Marshall answered, "He just headed to the toilet. He told me to wait here."
Katherine had no idea when did Kyle leave, since he had slipped away without making any noticeable sounds.
From her countenance, Marshall could tell that Katherine was confused.
He smiled, "Well, I told him to slip away quietly, since it might disturb you."
Katherine fixed her eyes on Marshall, with her face pulled.
She once again recalled what he had done to her last night.
Looking at Katherine's sullen face, Marshall clearly understood what she was thinking about.
He smiled in a calm and collective way, walked towards Katherine, raised his hand and tapped on his lips.
'How dare you, you shameless bastard!' With her teeth gritted, Katherine cursed inside of her heart.
Katherine shifted her eyes away after glaring at Marshall for a few seconds.
At the next moment, Clara walked towards her, as if she had already forgotten about things that had previously happened in the clothing shop, as well as the unpleasant phone chat with Marshall. With a quite genuine smiling face, she said, "I've just come out from the hall, and then I met you guys here. What a coincidence!"
Katherine chuckled, "Oh, it's a coincidence that we meet here, isn't it? I don't think so, sadly."
Her tone was somehow aggressive that others might think she wanted to pick a quarrel. Luckily, Clara didn't seem to mind, and continued with smile, "How long have you guys been here? I just got here, and felt almost choked by the crowds around me. Oh, it's always an embarrassment to stay with any strangers, isn't it?"
Katherine looked at Clara's skirt, which was purely white and in accordance with her elegant temperament.
Meanwhile, looking back at herself, she just looked exceptionally ordinary, and had nothing to do with any graceful temperament.
But, indeed, she was only ordinary anyway.
Since she was born, she was destined to be an ordinary, and lead a mundane life until her death.
Suddenly, Marshall stood beside Katherine and said, "We just got here either."
Saying so, he saw Kyle coming back from not far away.
Kyle was not seemingly happy to see Clara here.
In fact, he was disdainful to even talk to the two ladies from Hendersons'.
What's more, as Kyle was a man who would never hide his true feelings inside, Kyle would never disguise his disguise for someone.
He came, stood by the side of Katherine and turned to Clara, "Why you're here?"
He said so in an even more aggressive tone than Katherine did.
Forced out an amiable smile, Clara answered, "I came along with my father."
Kyle gazed at her up and down, and then said, "Nice skirt, it suits you very well! See, you don't have to steal things from others, since sooner or later, what suits you best will come to you itself!" Though he didn't mean to give any offense, Kyle was not seemingly conscious of the inappropriateness of what he said, which had really embarrassed Katherine and Clara.
Katherine, with a spurious smile, said, "let's get inside. It's getting a little awkward for us to stay here."
Clara's intention was quite overt - she wanted to attract the attention of the people around her.
However, she had picked a wrong place. The banquet hall would be a better choice, since crowds of people were gathering around there.
Indeed, as the four stepped inside the banquet hall, they soon became the center of attention.
It was quite an intriguing scene seeing these four people walk together: one was Marshall, followed by his ex and his little girlfriend at the same time, and the other was Kyle, a flippant bohemian young man from Haverford Family.
In threes and fours, people stood around and looked sidelong at the four, as if they were expecting something to happen.
Katherine could not help offering a sneering smile, wondering what these people were actually expecting to see.
If they were waiting to see a fight, they would most likely be disappointed then, since both she and Clara were concerned about face-saving, and thus would never fight with each other in public places. However, honestly, she didn't like the way Clara smiled to veil the actual sulk within her.
She actually liked the kind of Kyle, who would simply pull a face without any hesitation when he was upset, and hide none of his true feelings. Therefore, associating with him could truly give her a sense of security.
In contrast to Kyle, Clara, who was a genius for plotting against others, knew how to disguise her real affections and opinions very well.
Even Mrs. Grant would be pretty much considered as compatible compared to Clara.
Thinking that, Katherine could not help but turn to Marshall and ask, "Hey, I want to ask you something."
"
Without giving any immediate answer, Marshall showed a gesture "please" by reaching out his hands towards the rest area set aside, where Clara and Kyle then naturally moved to. Marshall stood on the same spot, and said, "Now, what's your question?"
Without going along with the two, Katherine got closer to Marshall and asked, "Well, have your mom and dad..."
With a pause, Katherine believed that Marshall knew what she was talking about.
Silently, Marshall stared at Katherine, without offering any response. In fear of being eavesdropped on by someone else, Katherine got a little closer and continued, "divorced?"
Hearing that, Marshall raised the corner of his mouth.
Without Kyle and Clara by their side, Katherine and Marshall were now standing close to each other, which attracted the attention of people around.
Waiting a while for Marshall's answer, Katherine was losing her patience, and said with a low voice, "You don't have to explain anything, actually. I know that it is true, and it is useless trying to hide anything from me."
Marshall smiled, "Come on, let's go there and take a seat."
Saying so, he raised one of his arms, and wrapped round Katherine's shoulder without touching her skin.
It was quite a normal and less ambiguous interaction between the two.
However, others might seize the chance and make an issue of that, since Katherine and Marshall were separated from each other already.
Journalists and many other media workers were also invited to the Old Mrs. Walters's birthday party.
Old Mrs. Walters used to be a drama actress when she was young, and had performed on the stage several times.
One day, she chose to quit the stage, as she had become a wife, a mother.
Today, on her eighteenth birthday, she wanted to feel radiant and resplendent once again, and thus had invited a few media companies to her birthday party.
Therefore, inevitably, Marshall and Katherine were also captured by the cameras.
Marshall and Katherine walked towards Kyle and Clara, and sat down by their sides.
There was a row of sofas lying there.
Kyle and Clara were sitting in distance from each other.
Katherine came up, and sat down by the side of Kyle naturally; for Marshall, he then sat down by Katherine from the other side, and Clara was sitting there next to him.
It was actually Clara's plan. She wanted to see these three being captured by the cameras of the media at the same time.
She was really suffering a public crisis for the moment. All of a sudden, those online supporters she hired were now failing to withstand the bad comments online coming against her overwhelmingly. Therefore, she now resorted to her last hope. She wanted to shift public attention from her to the three, who were sitting together aside ambiguously.
She believed that it could possibly earn herself chances to reverse the situation.
Katherine looked around, "So, what we're going to do next? Don't tell me that we have to stay here till night."
Seemingly, she was frustrated by the crowdedness around, and couldn't wait to go back home and hop into her own bed.
Marshall, with his body inclined to Katherine, answered, "A while later, lunch will be separately served to the guests present. Also, I heard that there will be lottery links later at night. They said that the prizes were particularly appealing."
Kyle joined their conversation, "Well, I guess the prizes will be nothing more than money."
Marshall shook his head, "I don't know. They are the ones who set the prize, and even my grandma knows nothing about that."
Kyle smacked and said, "Ha, they know how to make use of peoples' curiosity, don't they?"
Katherine offered a smile, and remained silent.
Clara was sitting there firmly. The three were sitting there and talking with each other in joy, which made Clara seem to be isolated. However, since she had long been a cool-headed and tolerant woman, something like this was not even a big deal for her at all. With elation, Kyle started to share stories about Old Mrs. Walters with the other two.
He said that Old Mrs. Walters used to be a famous opera actress, and was sought by many admirers.
However, after she married into Walters Family, she quit the stage - the family disdained to walk with those actors or actresses.
At that time, many people felt pity for her retirement from the stage, and bet that if, by any chance, she did not quit, she would definitely become one of the most reputable opera actresses across the country. Katherine took a sigh, "I guess the old couple must love each other very much."
She thought that Old Mrs. Walters must have made a really difficult choice on that.
Marshall, sitting aside, said, "No, not really. Her husband had found himself a concubine, who had given birth to a boy for him."
Hearing that, Katherine was dumbfounded for a second. But she soon realized that it was quite common in those wealthy families, since people's social concept at that time was significantly different from that of today.
Katherine sighed, "I eat my words. Rich men are all full of shit."
Kyle and Marshall were all stunned by her words.
Katherine turned to Kyle with disgust, "Think about it: how many times have you been visited by officer Mitchell?"
And then, she turned to Marshall, who was sitting close to her and staring at her.
With a lower voice, she seemed less confident, "And you are not so much better than him."
