CEO Proposed to His Ex-wife 99 Times -
Chapter 305 Nothing to Worry About
"Okay," answered Marshall noncommittally.
Clara felt his indifference to the conversation from his lukewarm reactions, so she said her goodnight greetings and was about to hang up.
After some thought, Marshall decided to bring it up. "Miss Henderson," he said.
Clara paused. "Yes?"
"I heard that you had an unpleasant encounter with Katherine and Kyle today."
Clara was well and truly taken aback this time. Sounding more serious than facetious, she asked, "So, what, are you trying to seek legal recourse for them?"
Marshall harrumphed. "I'm in no position to seek recourse on anyone's behalf. I simply wanted to make sure if this really happened today."
"Then yes, it did," answered Clara straight away, "however, I don't see any wrongdoing on my part."
Not that Marshall cared about who was in the wrong anyway.
"Kyle can be a very childish man," said Marshall, "as I'm sure you're aware. I just want to let you know that it's really not a good idea to mess with him. The man will do anything if provoked."
Clara sounded displeased when she replied. "I know that. That's why I've never clashed with Mr. Haverford before - not face-to-face, at least."
Marshall smiled before he continued. "Oh, and one more thing, Katherine is actually an even scarier figure than Kyle, and there might be even direr consequences if you mess with her."
Not waiting for Clara's response, Marshall went on. "Regardless of what my current relationship with Katherine is, I don't ever want to see her bullied, so should anything happen, I will take her side. So I wanted to give you a heads-up, just in case my family and yours clash over some unnecessary stuff and make a big mess out of it."
Not a sound could be heard from Clara's end. Might as well, since Marshall directly hung up the phone as he finished speaking. Somehow, he was feeling oddly giddy with delight.
Marshall decided to log onto the chatting app and check out Katherine's life updates. Katherine had recently posted a selfie with a skincare mask on. The mask was thin, and underneath it, her face could be clearly seen.
Marshall stared at the picture for a good while, having never seen Katherine like that before.
A young girl with a mask on, making a face for the camera. That was a sight everyone would like to behold, wasn't it? Even if one wasn't necessarily falling for her, one would appreciate the youthfulness in her. Marshall stared at the picture for quite some time, smiling despite himself. Silly girl, she probably didn't know that he friended her back on this app. Such an unguarded person she was, people might take advantage of that.
Marshall went through every single one of Katherine's posts.
Katherine had the "global" setting on, so everyone who was a friend could see all her posts. He saw the older ones from when she was still living with the Grants; she hadn't look too happy, but had maintained her positive attitude. She'd posted a picture of the sky, one of the garden, and one of the rising sun. Back then, there was no selfie, nor anyone else - none of the Grants made an appearance in her pictures. Somehow Marshall regretted that fact. She had tried very hard to live her best life, but the Grants, including him, failed to notice.
Marshall put the phone away on the bedside table, and turned off the light as he lay in bed.
The following couple of days, Marshall was so knee deep in work that he didn't have time to see Katherine. They didn't even call or text each other at all, as if they truly had nothing to do with each other anymore.
Kyle was the only one to call him constantly, since he was impatient to find out the results. Marshall didn't object to his pestering, but only told him to wait while Marshall's people conducted a careful investigation, because you didn't want to rush this kind of thing and run into a mistake.
Kyle would curse profusely when he mentioned his misfortune, verbally chewing out not only the two Bennett children but also the Henderson women. Naturally, however, the one he condemned the most was [Marcus].
Marshall would listen to him patiently while he did so, and when he finished his verbal assault, would ask him if he had contacted Katherine. And every time Marshall asked, Kyle had contacted her indeed. Kyle, truly bored out of his mind, would call Katherine and then Marshall every time, harassing everyone he could make contact with. So, Marshall would very conveniently ask him what Katherine was up to. Kyle, ever so honest, told Marshall everything Katherine did without holding anything back, so in that way, Marshall was able to indirectly keep close tabs on Katherine's whereabouts.
When Kyle told him Katherine was taking the first part of her driving tests, Marshall was surprised. "Why are you not with her?"
Because normally, Kyle's intrusive and fun-loving nature would surely have prompted him to follow along.
"I ain't with her for moral support because Hector is," said Kyle, "one is enough to keep her company."
With the phone in one hand and a pen in the other, Marshall was about to put his signature on a document. When he heard it, he stopped all motions. "Hector is with her, you said? Why isn't Hector at work?" "Huh," replied Kyle, "did I not tell you? Hex quit his job. He's been with Kathy for the past few days."
Marshall closed his eyes for a second before quickly signing his name. Putting down the papers and the pen, he stood up and said, "Okay, got it," and hung up the phone.
Marshall grabbed his coat and walked out of the office, running into Peter exiting the office when Marshall made his way to the elevator.
Surprised, Peter looked at Marshall and asked, "Where are you going, boss?"
Marshall stopped dead in his tracks. Where was he going exactly? He'd planned to go find Katherine, but what would he do when he did find her?
Peter held a document that he needed Marshall's signature on as he looked at his boss confusedly. "Going out for business?"
Marshall frowned. "Nope."
"Yes, that's what I think, too. I don't remember you having business engagements out of the office today."
Marshall alternated between looking at Peter and staring at the document in his hand. Seemingly carelessly, he looked outside the window to the space not far away before turning around and walking slowly into his office.
In the office, Peter handed the document over to Marshall. "Right, I mean to tell you that the Hendersons are hard to investigate on, because they keep a tight rein on the information they let out. I didn't find anything fishy from them, so I went ahead and investigated the Bennetts since I thought the Bennetts were more suspicious. And guess what I found!"
Marshall slowly looked up and gazed at Peter with a neutral, even slightly chilling expression.
Not daring to keep the boss dangling any longer, Peter said truthfully, "Patrick and Alexis were, for sure, not involved in this, but Ariel Kingsey, their mother, was! She went shopping in the mall that morning and met [Marcus] there. And that's how they made the connection."
But Marshall wasn't paying attention to any of this. The gloomy look on his face was not resulted by what Peter said, either. He was deep in his own thoughts. When he hung up on Kyle, he didn't really think before rushing out, because he wanted to know what that Hector dude was buzzing around Katherine for.
Hector's always being around Katherine had made Marshall extremely uneasy, but now that he thought about it, there was no reason for his uneasiness, since Hector clearly liked Katherine, a fact that Marshall had known from the very start.
Someone who liked Katherine wouldn't do anything to harm her, hence there was no need for Marshall to worry. Pfft, why would he worry at all?
Marshall closed his eyes once more and placed his hands on top of his work desk when he heard Peter say, "So, shall I tell what I dug up to Mr. Haverford?"
