Chapter9

I had once looked up to him, worshipped him like he was a st

in the sky.

Even after fifteen years by his side, I still felt like I had somehow intruded into his life. So when he rekindled his old flame with Rachel, I kept retreating, hoping he would at least leave me a small place in his life.

When I was on the brink of death, he was pouring his heart out to his first love.

When I became a lost soul, he was with Rachel, sharing our marital bed..

But now that I'm truly dead, who is this performance for?

I am nothing but bones and dust, and you, Jackson, are preparing for your wedding

night.

The woman who once abandoned all pride and dignity just to love you...

You've already pushed her into the grave with your own hands.

It didn't take long to confirm my identity-there was no doubt that the body was mine.

Rachel acted as if nothing had happened, clinging to Jackson's shoulder, pretending to be scared..

Zoey finally made her way to me, trembling as she tried to smooth out my tangled

hair.

She had always been strong, but now she was sobbing uncontrollably, pounding the bed in frustration.

She blamed herself for not stopping me, saying she deserved to die, saying she should have gone with me to face the danger

I wanted to comfort her, but my hand passed right through her back.

That's when I truly realized I was dead, and tears began to stream down my face. girl, I went because of my own mistakes in love. Why would you have to die with me?

I wanted to tell her I didn't regret meeting her, that my only regret was not spending more time with her while I was alive.

When I finally made something of myself, my parasitic parents and brother tried to reconnect, only to curse me at the company's gate when I refused. They accused me of being heartless and ungrateful-no wonder I had no friends.

But Zoey stood by me, broom in hand, arguing with them. When she won, she smiled

at me like a little ray of sunshine.

In my life, I made many decisions I came to regret.

But becoming friends with her was never one of them.

Too bad the dead can't speak, no matter how much I scream, she can't hear me.

A knock came on the door of the morgue: "Captain, the suspect has confessed that

Rachel was involved. What should we do?"

Jackson gripped Rachel's hand tightly, his gaze fixed on her panicked expression. Rachel forced a weak smile. "It wasn't me, Jackson, you have to believe me.

Jackson grabbed her jaw, glaring at her with fury.

"It was you. You said everything would be fine once we paid the ransom!"

His breathing grew erratic as he squeezed Rachel's neck, leaving red marks. "Give Jenna back to me! If it weren't for you, we'd still be okay!"
