Gordon's POV

Teagan didn't speak to me the entire ride back to the penthouse she'd forced us to stay in with her. I hadn't anticipated getting in between two alphas who seemed to hate one another, but it hardly mattered to me. I knew exactly where Emoni was. Megan walked out looking upset. She scowled at me as I passed her in the hallway. I walked to the elevator under the watchful eye of Teagan's guards, a little discomfited by their stares. Where was Greyson? Vlad grumbled a bit. He is strong. You need not worry about him. What about our cub?

I chuckled, leaning back with a small smile. Even if Mordecai was just lying to me about helping me, Matt had my Emoni and I did not worry about her safety. He would do a much better job of protecting her than I could at the moment. Hell, I couldn't even protect myself.

I walked out of the elevator and into the penthouse. Greyson was laid across the couch, thick plumes of smoke drifted up from his mouth. The bong was empty save for the ice water beside him. He looked feverish and sickly though he was strangely flushed as if he'd just gotten out of a shower.

His feet were bare and his clothes were clinging to him.

"What the hell happened to you? You look like shit."

Greyson's eyes cracked open, glowing in his face and I froze in place. Maybe in my prime, I could have taken Greyson in a fight. At the very least, not half drugged and subdued as I was, I could buy myself some time, but Vlad was barely awake to complain about my concern about Greyson.

I'd be f****d if Greyson decided to get off the couch for a fight.

He sat up slowly and looked at me, staring at me like he barely recognized me, or he was just barely conscious.

"She smelled like rotten wood and sewage."

I frowned. Was he talking about Megan?

"But if she found out, she'd..." he shuddered and growled all at once as he leaned forward with a soft retching sound.

He got off the couch and stumbled down the hallway like a drunk. I followed him, my heart racing.

"How much have you drank? What did you take?"

He fell through the door of the bathroom and fell to his knees, gripping the toilet and hurling what sounded like his soul into it. My stomach turned as he panted and shuddered.

"I'm calling the hospital-"

"No," he grunted. "No."

"You don't get sick," I said and kneeled, searching his pockets. "Give me your phone."

"No," he turned sharply, rolling and leaning against the wall, shielding the pocket with his phone in it from me. "They'll know. They'll tell. She'll die."

I remained still, "What are you talking about, Greyson?"

He slumped forward, "Grace..."

My heart lurched and I grabbed him by his shoulder, "What the hell are you talking about, Greyson? Why would-"

I broke off at the look of despair on his face. Tears ran over the banks of his eyes.

"Adonai... he's... He's furious. I can't... I don't feel good..."

"How much did you smoke?"

"Not enough," he chuckled. "Not... a high enough dosage. M-Megan... Megan likes it."

I swallowed the bout of nausea that went through me as he pulled his knees to his chest.

"She'll die..." he said softly. "Just like ev-everyone else. She'll die. She'll kill her. She'll make me watch just like before. I'm so tired. So tired..."

I'd never seen him like this. I reached toward him, cautiously. He was cold to touch like his wolf had left him partially or he was going into shock. Maybe he was. What was I supposed to do then? I put my hand on his head. "Let me at least get you into bed and something to settle your stomach. Have you eaten?"

"Couldn't."

I nodded and hefted him to his feet before steering him towards the door. We made it to the room he was staying in and I got him onto the bed as he started shivering. I tied his hair up to keep the wet length of it from making it worse and went searching for something that would help. There wasn't much of anything in the penthouse but groceries.

I lucked out and found some ginger to make into a tea as I turned over his words. Not much of it made sense. I almost wished I could call Emoni to figure out what she might know about it, but I couldn't risk it.

Teagan had killed my wife. It wasn't beyond her to kill Emoni, but what did Megan have to do with it?

I carried the honey and ginger tea towards his bedroom and found him sitting up on the edge of the bed. His hands were shaking.

"You're not getting out of bed."

"I have to report."

"I'll take the f*****g call. You're sick, drink this and lay back."

He shook his head, "It won't be enough."

He took the mug and drank slowly as I sat in the chair near the bed, "Why don't you start from the beginning?"

"I've been... high every time Megan has f****d me. I'm pretty sure I'm in a constant state of high now because the scent of her is stomach-turning, but it's not working anymore."

He shuddered, "I should have known it would be like this since we're in the same city now."

"The same city?"

"Adonai... is pretty f*****g certain Grace is our mate."

Well, if that wasn't a f*****g development. Vlad perked up with glee.

I approve of him. He will protect our cub.

While that was true, and I knew it with every fiber of my being, it wasn't that simple. Megan was just as insane as her mother. Teagan already had a reason to hate Emoni's existence. If Megan found out, he wasn't wrong. She'd try to kill Emoni at the first opportunity.

"The... responsible thing would be to reject her, at least then Megan wouldn't have a reason to attack her, but Adonai's clear that we'll be in the grave before I could manage to do it."

Vlad growled, Reject our cub?

I stiffened at the thought, but he wasn't wrong. Emoni's safety had always been at the top of my priorities. Knowing that it was at the top of his warmed me. I wanted to agree no matter what Vlad said, but I thought of Grace, my mate, and how every moment with her until her last breath had been so full of joy and goodness.

I thought of my daughter maybe never knowing that joy or thinking that she'd been rejected because of whatever had happened to her in the years we've been apart. I thought of her future happiness being only half as full as I knew it would be. It was different if they had never met or if the situation was less charged, but Emoni was in danger because of me foremost.

Greyson rejecting her would do nothing to save her.

"If you reject my daughter, Greyson, I will kill you."

His head jerked up and for a long moment, we stared at each other.

"Your... daughter?"

I nodded.

"Does Teagan know?" He asked leaning towards me, his eyes wide with horror.

"Not yet." I leaned forward, "I gave Alpha Asra information about her, enough to find her. Teagan knows probably already that she is in the city and will probably be trying to find a way to kill her."

Greyson got to his feet, "We have to get out of here. We have to... We have to get to her."

"What's wrong?"

"Megan said they were going to Club Heaven tonight."

I got to my feet, "What?"

He cursed, stumbling, "I should have. Damn it, she has your eyes. I didn't even think-"

I shoved him back and shook my head, "You're in no state to go anywhere, what would you do when you got-"

His phone rang and we both looked at it. He snatched it out of his pocket and answered it.

"Yes, Alpha?"

I held my breath, unable to hear what she was saying, but the look on his face told me more than I thought possible.

An idea came to mind and I backed away from him to knock on the door, "Hey Greyson, are you in there?"

His brow furrowed and tilted the phone away, "I'm on the phone with Alpha O'Brian. Did you need something?"

"Any chance we could find some time to tour Midnight?" I asked, "Alpha Asra said I should explore the city."

Understanding dawned on him. He looked at the phone seemingly concerned before his body slumped forward with relief.

"Of course, I will let him know, Alpha... Yes, of course. As you wish."

He hung up and he collapsed into the bed, shaking, "They're on their way back for dinner. The line was too long." "And?"

"They got an invitation to the after-party in a few days."

I nodded and slumped against the door. Emoni would be safe for a little while longer.
