Auctioned Mates Revenge -
Chapter 61
Greyson's
POV
I waited for him to answer the door. We had an understanding that so long as he didn't make my job hard, I would give him as much privacy and peace as I could. Luckily for me, Gordon was a reasonable man. He never tried to escape or undermine the arrangement. He was stuck the same way I was and bound to Teagan and her daughter, Megan, for the time being.
I wasn't stupid enough to think that Gordon hadn't agreed to meet with Matt Wallber for some other purpose, but I didn't push because it was unlikely to cause problems. Everyone knew that Teagan and Ben were friends from school. They were close to this day in a different way than Mordecai and Ben were.
Teagan wasn't a big player in the cross-continent pack struggles. Her little pack to the north just helped Ben avoid paying the packs in the middle of the continent to transport goods by running them through her territory. The thing about it was that Teagan didn't have big goals. She wanted what she wanted how she wanted and her daughter Megan was the same way.
I breathed a sigh of relief at the realization that they would be gone for a while.
The door opened and I froze in place.
The scent of fresh honey and cinnamon filled my nose. Adonai, my wolf, stirred with alarm as I looked around the room, searching for the source of the scent. I thought maybe someone was drinking a chai latte, but it was missing the right kind of spice for this. I thought of my mother's words about how my father always smelled like her favorite dessert. She had been an alpha in every way but the political sense.
I hated most desserts, but chai lattes were a weakness no one knew about. My heart started racing in terror and my shoulders grew tense.
It was impossible. My gaze fell on the beautiful blonde woman with blue eyes as clear as the winter sky. Adonai howled and I felt his power storming through me, urging me to shift to present myself to her as her mate. I held myself still, just staring at her and taking deep calming breaths.
This wasn't good.
She couldn't be here. Though the knowledge of her existence filled me with joy, her presence here was problematic.
Frost Melt was dangerous for her.
Teagan and Megan were gone, but they would return soon enough. If they found out who she was to me, there was no telling what Teagan would do, let alone Megan.
A scream of terror and agony drifted through my mind from the depths of my memories. I had stopped trying to recall the woman's name. She and I had parted ways that day and I never saw her again. The crazed look in her eyes had told me everything I needed to know.
The only way I was getting out of Megan's grip was through my death.
A part of me was okay with that. I had no family left in the world, no friends. I owed a life debt to Teagan.
This woman's presence in Frost Melt changed everything.
Adonai howled, She is our mate. We have to-
We can't.
We have been alone long enough!
I closed my eyes, clenching my jaw and fist to force myself to remain still.
Better alone than her blood on our hands, I replied and Adonai went silent. I lifted my head and turned my gaze from her to look at Gordon who looked at me strangely. He seemed pale.
"Are you hurt?" I asked, scanning him. "You look pale."
He gave out a wry chuckle, "I'll be fine. A little sleep and maybe some food."
I nodded, "Good to know."
I turned to Matt Wallber and the woman beside him before offering my hand to him.
"I'm Greyson Black, Gordon's bodyguard, and occasional errand runner."
Gordon cackled, "I'd never call you an errand runner... Part-time chef is better."
I chuckled as I shook Matt's hand.
"Good to meet you. This is Renda," he said, gesturing to the woman beside him. I shook her hand. Then, he gestured to the woman on the other side of the room. "Her name is Grace. They're assistants of mine. Prime plotters, the most mischievous minds I could find." Gordon laughed and it struck me as oddly genuine.
Grace, Adonai mooned. She's so beautiful...
Grace approached me, offering her hand. Her eyes sparkled with some secret knowledge, some mischievous thought that had me wondering what she had planned.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Black."
"Call me Greyson," I said almost breathlessly as I took her hand and shook it gently, savoring the zing of awareness and the warmth of her hand in mine.
It would haunt my dreams for the rest of my life, but it was the only solace I could take from this moment.
Grace's eyes went wide as our hands met. Had she felt it? She had to have from the way she seemed caught off guard. The shock melted away as I slowly released her hand and turned from the group of them.
"Hopefully, not so devious that you plan to take the distillery."
Matt laughed, "Not at all. I'm just here to secure a deal with Blue Ice for my club in Midnight."
I nodded looking at Gordon who leaned back, eyes clear and his body relaxed. There was something in his posture that made me pause. I didn't listen to much about what they were saying. Besides some accounting for supplies and basic contract terms, I didn't know much about the distillery.
Even if I did, I didn't think I could concentrate with Grace in the room with me. It was hard enough to just stay still and not inch towards her.
I was almost grateful when my phone began to buzz in my pocket. I pulled it out and grimaced at the caller ID. I glanced at Gordon meaningfully. His lips twitched with distaste and he nodded.
"I have to take this," I walked outside and closed the door behind me before answering the phone.
"Greyson," Teagan said, "It took you long enough."
"Mr. Wallber arrived," I said. "They're speaking now."
"I see," she said with a hum. "And where is he staying?"
"At the Zima house."
"Ah, good. We'll be around shortly. We should be touching down within the hour."
My heart lurched, "As you wish."
"Have rooms made up for Megan and me before we arrive? Oh, and do make that lovely poutine for dinner. Megan's been raving about it for days."
Adonai grumbled, I don't want to see her.
"As you wish."
She hung up then and the rudeness of it felt sharper than usual. I turned back and took a deep breath wondering how I was going to get Grace as far away from Megan as possible.
I knocked and opened the door, looking at Gordon across the room. He went still as if bracing for the news.
"That was Alpha O'Brian. She says that she and Megan will be here within an hour."
Gordon paled. His eyes widened and he looked at Grace. Grace went pale, but her expression didn't change. She looked at Gordon then Matt.
Matt sighed, "That's... unsurprising. I had hoped to have a bit more time before I had to deal with Teagan."
He looked at Renda, "Looks like I'll probably be here a bit longer than I first thought ladies. I'll send you two back to meet up with Felix."
I felt myself relax a bit and I glanced at my watch, "I'd be happy to drive them if need be."
Matt glanced at me and his lips twitched, "That would be great. I think we have a bit more to discuss and I'd rather have this done before Teagan arrives."
Gordon stood, "Well, we can go to my house. I'm sure you can deposit me there without worry to receive them if they're a bit early?"
I nodded, grateful and leading them out to the side door. The wind was surprisingly gentle as we walked back up the slope to the Zima house. Gordon welcomed them into the house as I checked the cabinets.
"She wants poutine."
Gordon scoffed, "Purely genetics that she's still a stick."
I laughed. He wasn't wrong. We were out of things, so I made a plan to stop in town at the grocery store before leading Renda and Grace back down the slope to my jeep. I ushered them both into the back seat before getting inside.
I held my breath as a familiar car began to climb the hill towards the distillery. I glanced nervously into the back seat before climbing into the driver's seat and revving the engine. I turned the heat on high and drove towards the slope. "Try not to say anything."
They both nodded and Grace tugged her hood down a bit further as I slowed to a stop when the driver honked at me and hoped for the best.
