Alpha's One Night Bride -
Alpha’s One Night Bride – Chapter 100
Arina, Emee, and the rest of the crew stayed back at the manor once the ceremony came to an end. Jonathan wasn’t planning on telling anybody, other than Boris where he was headed. He didn’t want to worry anybody, but there were questions he needed answered.
He told everybody he was going out into the town with Boris to try and get his mind off Nikini’s death. Which he fully plans on doing, but he also needed to make a small stop somewhere first and speak with somebody.
The prison waiting room was quiet; just the light tapping of the dispatcher typing away on his computer in the corner of the room. The television was turned off because of how late it was. Boris didn’t ask any questions as to why Jonathan wanted to see Rock. He was done asking questions about anything now.
Jonathan followed Boris through the male wing of the prison; it was much like the female wing, except it smelled fouler. Like Willa, Boris was kept at the far end of the prison. Once they reached his door, Jonathan couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous. It’s been a long time since he was face to face with Rock and he wasn’t sure what to expect.
“I’ll be in there the entire time,” Boris assured him.
Jonathan nodded as Boris unlocked the door and pushed it open.
Rock sat on his bed, he was staring out the small, barred window that hung high on his wall and overlooked the Silverside Bay. The moon was revealed through the bars of the window and reflected on the bay’s waters.
To Jonathan’s surprise, Rock seemed calm and well put together. His cell smelled less bad than Willa’s did, and he didn’t look as manic and dirty. His light blue jumpsuit looked clean enough and he was sitting on his bed with his chained wrists hanging loosely on his lap.
He even looked cleanly shaved and blemish-free.
Rock turned his head and stared at Jonathan; there was recognition in his eyes and then a bit of surprise. Had he forgotten who Jonathan was?
Rock stood to his feet and kept his stance.
“Rock…” Jonathan said, keeping his tone formal as he stopped walking toward him. Rock didn’t say anything, which was surprising to Jonathan. He expected Rock to have a lot of unpleasant words to say. “I need to ask you something.”
“I figured that’s the reason for this unannounced visit,” Rock said, a bit of sarcasm oozing from his words.
“Did you know?” Jonathan asked, getting to the point.
He frowned and tilted his head; he looked confused, but Jonathan didn’t know if it was an act or not.
“What?” He asked, sounding annoyed.
“About Melissa?” Jonathan clarified.
His eyes narrowed as he stared at Jonathan; there was a flash of something in his eyes that Jonathan didn’t recognize.
“What about her?” He asked.
Jonathan was getting annoyed by this back and forth.
“That she was really Willa in disguise. The Witch of Trickery?” Jonathan said.
Rock’s eyes widened in surprise as he thought about it. Jonathan couldn’t tell what he was thinking about.
To Jonathan’s surprise, Rock began laughing.
“No,” Rock said in a pit of giggles. “But I can’t say I’m surprised.”
“What does that mean?” Jonathan asked.
Rock leaned forward, towards Jonathan.
“Figure it out, Overseer,” he said between gritted teeth.
He reached his hands out for Jonathan to grab him; without hesitation, Jonathan grabbed onto his arms and was taken back.
Way back.
It was a familiar setting; it was a foggy night near an old swamp. The air was musky, and Jonathan found it difficult to breathe.
He was here before; at least once before. When he was looking into Spencer’s life; this was the place where his mother gave him away to that strange, sketchy couple. Just as Jonathan thought of that couple; they emerged from the shadows. A woman approached them; she was wearing a dark red cloak; Jonathan recognized her as Spencer’s birth mother, but at the time he saw her, he couldn’t see her face. Now the outline of her fair features was shown through the cloak.
Spencer stood beside her; he still looked terrified as to what was happening and why his mother was handing him off to this strange couple.
Jonathan noticed the first time that she was holding a small baby; she was holding a small baby this time too, only she was trying to hand them the baby as well.
“We just want the boy,” the female’s voice said in a low raspy tone.
“Please, I need you to take her too,” the cloaked woman pleaded.
Her voice sounded strained and broken. The small baby cried in her arms.
“We have no use for an infant,” the lady said as she dug her fingernails into Spencer’s arm and pulled him towards them.
“Mom?!” Spencer cried out.
The cloaked woman said nothing as the couple began dragging Spencer away.
“Please!” The woman cried to them. “Take her too.”
But they ignored her while she ignored Spencer. The baby continued screaming in the cloaked woman’s arms.
She looked defeated.
Jonathan decided to take a closer look. He made his way across the small area they were standing on and approached the cloaked woman; he knew she wouldn’t be able to see him because technically he wasn’t actually there. She turned just in time for Jonathan and reach her and that’s when he saw the infant she was holding.
The first thing he saw was her fire-red hair that was showing through the blanket. He gasped as her fair features came into view and he got a glimpse of the freckled nose young girl.
He recognized her almost instantly.
“Ronnie…” he breathed.
She was screaming and crying in such discomfort. He heard footsteps from nearby that startled him; he turned in time to see Melissa walking toward them.
Well, probably not actually Melissa.
Willa disguised as Melissa.
He took an unsteady step backward as the cloaked woman’s eyes widened as Willa approached them.
“I might be able to help you with your problem,” Willa said; her voice was soft and compassionate.
The woman, who was also crying along with Ronnie, stared at Willa with such judgment. Weirdly, she trusted that sketchy and dirty couple more than she trusted Willa. Jonathan could still hear the faint screams of Spencer as he continued to kick and scream as he was dragged away by that couple.
Jonathan winced at thought of knowing what was going to happen to Spencer. But he also knew that it made Spencer who he was today, and Jonathan was glad he was who he was and that they had the privilege of knowing him and welcoming him into their lives.
“Who are you?” The cloaked woman asked Willa who had stopped a few feet away.
“My name is Melissa,” Willa lied. “I’ve been wanting to have a child for a long time now. But unfortunately, I am unable to.”
She sounded sad, but Jonathan knew her well enough to know that she was faking it.
“Why?” The woman asked, sniffling. “What’s wrong with you?”
“A lot of things,” Willa said. “I was sick for a long time. Once I got better, I wasn’t able to produce any eggs.”
“And you want this baby?” The cloaked woman said.
Willa nodded slowly as she rummaged through a small bag she was holding. She pulled out a white envelope.
“I’m willing to pay handsomely,” Willa told her, and handed her the envelope.
The cloaked woman took it suspiciously and peeked inside; her eyes widened, and her jaw dropped as she looked back at Willa.
“All of this… for her?” The woman asked.
Willa nodded.
The woman smiled and handed Ronnie to Willa without any more questions.
“I never want to see her,” the woman said.
Willa’s eyes darkened as she took a step away.
“No problem,” Willa said before she disappeared.
Jonathan gasped as he released Rock and was brought back to the present moment. He stumbled backward and stared at Rock with complete shock.
“You knew Ronnie wasn’t your daughter?” Jonathan asked, breathlessly.
Rock laughed again.
“Of course, I knew. Melissa randomly showed up saying she adopted a baby girl. She wanted to have a family for a long time. I told her I would leave Emlin to be with her if she could somehow have a child. Knowing she couldn’t have any,” Rock said rolling his eyes. “She cheated though. Adoption wasn’t what I meant.”
“Who is Ronnie’s real mom?” Jonathan asked in dismay.
Rock shrugged.
“Some woman who sells her kids for drugs,” Rock said.
Ronnie’s mom was the same woman who gave up Spencer to that horrible, sketchy couple. Which meant Ronnie must have been Spencer’s sister… That’s why Emlin was looking over Spencer and brought him here. Because he was Ronnie’s brother. He must have also been Jessica’s mate and that’s why Emlin wanted him to go to Moon-Valley vs. Ironclaw.
“Any more questions?” Rock asked, eyeing Jonathan.
“No,” Jonathan said.
Jonathan looked at Boris who was staring back at him confused.
“I’ll explain later,” Jonathan said to him, answering his unspoken question. “We need to go.”
