Chapter 18

I had thought about what it would be like to meet Cassius again.

With his privileged background and inherent pride.

Our breakup had been peaceful, so if we ever ran into each other, He would either ignore me, or we might exchange polite nods and greetings. After all, my parents and relatives were all in New York.

Cassius and I also shared some mutual friends.

It was impossible to avoid any interaction for a lifetime.

But I never imagined that this man, so high and mighty, adored by others, Would have such a moment of losing composure and looking disheveled.

At that time, I was in an especially good mood from having slept well, wearing a newly bought nude pink cashmere dress, with beautifully applied makeup.

I looked like a ripe and sweet peach.

I was holding Darius's arm, laughing as we walked out of the revolving door.

Then, I saw Cassius getting out of his car.

I froze for a moment, my steps halting.

Darius's warm fingers gently gripped mine.

Cassius's shirt was a bit wrinkled, his tie undone.

His face showed undisguised weariness, his brows deeply furrowed, eyes bloodshot.

People bustled around us, and a musical fountain nearby played cheerful tunes.

This scene was like slow motion in a movie.

Only I wasn't a spectator, but an unexpected protagonist.

Perhaps Cassius's current appearance was too surprising.

Darius instinctively shielded me behind him.

But Cassius's expression was very calm.

He called my name gently, like he used to when we were in love:

"Everly."

I stood still, not moving.

The music still echoed cheerfully in my ears.

But for some reason, my heart felt an indescribable sadness.

Maybe for the Everly who heard those hurtful words that night.

Maybe for the Everly who was suddenly told it was over.

Or maybe for the Everly who loved foolishly for seven years, but only took seven days to completely let go.

"Everly, I've come to take you back."

Cassius never once looked at Darius.

His gaze fell on my face, unexpectedly gentle.

I couldn't even remember how long it had been, before our breakup, since he had looked at me like this.

Cassius stopped about a meter in front of me.

"Everly, let's go back and get married. We'll have a good life together, okay?"

He spoke so earnestly, so seriously that I almost believed That the Cassius who not long ago said he would give another girl his name was just my imagination. But it's too late, Cassius.

A shattered heart can't be pieced back together.

And the new heart that grew in the swamp is already occupied by someone else.
